Breathing
QUESTION: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU TOOK A REALLY BIG DEEP BREATH?
The forgotten art of breathing!
It's probably just as well we don't have to remember to breathe - Most of us would probably forget. Ever watched a child try to hold their breath to make themself pass out, to get their own way? They can't! The reflex to breathe is too strong - before they can become unconscious, their unconscious mind takes over and forces an enormous breath.
Normal breathing is an unconscious activity. Right now you are breathing at exactly the right rate and depth to take in all the Oxygen you need, and to expel all the Carbon Dioxide from your bloodstream. All thanks to the supreme coordination of your nervous system.
But just as we should stretch all our muscles to their full length to keep them flexible, we should also regularly stretch our lungs (and diaphragm muscle) to their fullest capacity!
Try it. In the shower is a particularly good time. Take three deliberate, full, slow, deep breaths. As big as you can take in. If this is a new activity, you will probably feel dizzy after doing it. Your brain won't be used to all that oxygen, all at one time!
Another good time is when you are feeling tense, angry, stressed. Really let yourself experience the full breaths and feel the tension leaving your body.
Just before physical exertion is another good time to take some really deep breaths. Make sure you've got a good amount of oxygen in your bloodstream before your muscles start burning it off.
The other good time to "power breathe" is when you've been stuck on your behind for a bit too long!!
HERE'S A THOUGHT!!
"Habitually think optimistically and hopefully."
